    Loti Levels of Technology Integration

Technology Integration is a hot and huge topic in IT area. We are all living in information age, technology has been a necessary part for school teaching and learning. To prepare pre-service teacher to have basic technology competency is a must. That’s why every undergraduate student in the college of Education has to take our EDIT 2000 classes—Basic Instructional Technology Competency. I am teaching two sessions this semester and also create a teaching weblog at www.blogger.com . I found it easier to use than http://www.livejournal.com/

I am teaching Loti Levels of Technology Integration to my EDIT 2000 class today. Loti is good for students to get start to know what technology integration is about. I still remember I include the technology integration levels in my application documents for UGA. There are seven levels of technology integration categorized by loti. More information about this can be found at the LOTI website.  My interpretation of the LOTI can also be found at my teaching blog as well.

Currently in China, technology uses in K-12 school settings are most falling at the level of awareness and Exploration. Technology are mainly used by teachers to increase their productivity such as using excel to create a grading book, basic computer literacy classes, creating an online tutorial or simulation as a enrichment for students’ learning. In some big cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, some middle school have already set up their campus intranet, activities at the 3 level Infusion such as allowing students to use WebQuest to research and communicate are becoming popular. To know how to effectively use technology is necessary, however, without advanced technology support, activities of technology integration requiring higher thinking and research levels are still hard to execute. I am quite concerned about the technology integration situation in under-developed areas in China. This year, when I went back to my hometown, I was very glad to know that my high school finally set up it campus intranet last year. But this is only one K-12 school in my county to have campus intranet. And my county has the population of 400,000 and hundreds of elementary and middle schools.

    What goals do I have?

As IT researcher, there are several goals we should determine before getting started such as theoretical goals and predictive goals categorized by my advisor Dr. Tom Reeves from the University of Georgia. More information about the goals could be found on the page. It is necessary for me to determine what type of goals I have/I am able to have before I start to compose my research agenda. After reading the information on the webpage, Design/Development goals are what I have now. It is necessary for me to have an opportunity to find an authentic research site, help solve problems, and develop creative approaches within the time frame of my doctoral study.

First Entry--getting to know what it is about
Before starting this one, I have already had several blogs such as my teaching blog. Blog is a new tool for communication with others. There are different types of Weblogs online such as cooking, personal space, teaching, and research blogs. It is a form of Web site, but anyone can use it without Webpage composing skills. I guess it might be the reason why it became popular worldwide so soon.

Well, I would use this blog to record my research agenda. Why am I doing research? Good question. I am doing research because I am a doctoral student. Research is one of the major tasks for every doctoral student in any subjects. I first get to know what research was is from a quote (I don’t remember who said it)—“Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought”. So it is a thinking and exploring process, why don't I enjoy it? What is my research about? My major is Instructional Technology. So everything you found on this blog will have something to do with learning, teaching, technology integration, etc.
